Solitary Man: HARRY DEAN STANTON

SS: Did they initially go against your Christian, Baptist upbringing?

HDS: Of course. It goes against all organized religions. They’re all rigid and it’s illusory. It’s ego-based. All religions are macrocosms of the ego. That’s what it is. Ultimately you have to accept that. Don’t go along with it, but be aware of it.

SS: Are you still watching the Game Show Network?

HDS: Yeah, I’m watching it now.

SS: What is it that you find fascinating about game shows?

HDS: The questions and answers. I don’t like the hosts or the panels or any of them. They get on my nerves, but I love the game.

SS: The game itself, or the human drama?

HDS: No, just the game. It’s an idiosyncrasy. It’s just what it is.

SS
: What is it in your life that gives you a great deal of pleasure?

HDS: Doing nothing.

SS: Just being.

HDS: Yeah. Being. Yes to it all. I believe that’s a Nietzsche quote.
